Dublin Institute of Technology Students Win The 29th IHI Business Management Game 2014

A team of 5 students, representing Dublin Institute of Technology was selected for the 2nd consecutive year as the outright winner of the Irish Hospitality Institute (IHI) Business Management Game 2014, in association with our new main sponsor Compass Group Ireland at AVIVA Stadium/Meetings & Events and the winning team prize sponsored by Febvre & Co.

 The team scored top marks in the competition that attracted eight teams representing young hospitality managers of the future from all over Ireland. The 29th IHI Business Management Game, which took place in the AVIVA Stadium, Ballsbridge, Dublin 4 is also supported by Irish Hotels Federation, HOTS and Forás na Gaeilge.

The IHI President, Nicky Logue MIHI alongside John D Toner L.FIHI as Chair of the College of Fellows resided over the Annual Fellows & Patrons Evening Event of the Irish Hospitality Institute.The event commenced with all guests treated to afternoon tea in the Slieve Donard Resort & Spa, Co. Down. A guided tour hosted by David McAnirn (Blue Badge Tour Guide) of the Mourne Mountains was the afternoon adventure. On return to Slieve Donard Resort & Spa all guests were then treated before evening dinner to a storytelling by Sam Moore about the history of Slieve Donard Mountain.

 120 members and guests of the Institute were welcomed to some fabulous organic & biodynamic Prosecco,wines & Chardonnay range kindly sponsored by Tindal Wine Merchants hosted in the impressive grounds that was The Conrad Hotel, Dublin. The group were spoilt for choice as The Conrad, Dublin treated everyone to a sumptuous BBQ with an array of delicious food and refreshing beverages which was consumed yesterday by all delegates present.

Guests caught up with fellow colleagues of the industry in a relaxed and stress free setting. The Institute would like to thank Martin Mangan MIHI, General Manager /Director and all his team at The Conrad Hotel, Dublin, Anthony Tindal and Declan Saunders from Tindal Wine Merchants and finally Susan Kennedy from Lensmen Photography.

Vikings return to Clontarf

Tourism Ireland invited a group of influential travel and lifestyle journalists – from Norway, Sweden and Denmark – to attend last weekend’s Battle of Clont

arf re-enactment and to visit some of our other Viking-related sites and attractions in Waterford and elsewhere around Ireland.

During their time in Waterford, the journalists enjoyed a guided tour of the Viking Triangle, which included a visit to Reginald’s Tower and the Waterford Museum of Treasures. Their itinerary was designed by Fáilte Ireland.

Tourism Ireland is using the 1,000th anniversary of the famous Battle of Clontarf as a ‘hook’ to shine a spotlight on Waterford and Ireland in Scandinavia right now. A busy programme of PR and publicity activity, as well as social media, is reminding prospective holidaymakers there about the historical links between their countries and ours – and inviting them to come and discover the many sites and attractions in Ireland with Viking connections.

Aileen Hickey, Tourism Ireland’s manager for the Nordic region, said: “The 1,000th anniversary of the Battle of Clontarf presents us with a wonderful opportunity to shine a spotlight on Waterford and Ireland in Scandinavia and remind people in Norway, Sweden and Denmark about the historical links between their countries and ours. As well as highlighting last weekend’s re-enactment of the Battle of Clontarf, we are inviting Scandinavians to come and discover some of the many fascinating sites and attractions in Ireland with Viking connections during 2014.”

 

 

 

Search for Tourism Towns

Fáilte Ireland today opened applications from eligible towns across the country for the 2014 Tourism Towns Award – eligible towns are those ranked in the top 100 TidyTowns for 2013 and the closing date for applications is Thursday 22nd May 2014.

In a change to previous years, the 2014 process will honour two overall winners – Best Small Town and Best Large Town each winning €5,000 along with marketing and development supports from Fáilte Ireland.

The award, now in its third year, is all about recognising Irish towns and villages where the local community goes the extra mile to enhance their appeal to tourists.  Last year Kilkenny took home the overall crown with Portmagee the inaugural award in 2012.

Officially opening the call for applications, Minister of State for Tourism and Sport, Michael Ring said –

“This award is all about recognising Irish towns and villages which have really gone the extra mile to make Ireland even more attractive for tourists.  Tourism isn’t just a business, it’s a community industry and that’s why the whole community has a role in supporting tourism.  I would encourage all the eligible towns to apply this year and look forward to hearing the overall winners later in the year.”

The award will continue to focus on how participating towns have developed their local area in the following key tourism areas:

Sense of Place – How the town tells its own unique story to visitors, what’s special about it, and what distinguishes it from other towns.

Local Involvement - How the local community works together to provide an authentic visitor experience.

Tourism Experiences – What the town has to offer visitors.

Promotion of the town – How the town takes a unified approach to marketing and promoting the town into a “tourism town”.

Fiona Buckley, Head of Experience Development with Fáilte Ireland emphasised the important characteristics of a tourism town and the how the award scheme seeks to recognise them:

“For us a good tourism town is all about the role of the community in welcoming visitors and telling the story of the local area which all add significantly to the enjoyment that visitors have.”
